Why these matter
- Height - keeps the route off low bridges and overpasses. Bridge strikes are
the most common truck crash of their kind; many old parkway and rail bridges clear
under 12 ft. A standard van is 13'6" (13.5).
- Gross weight - avoids bridges and roads posted with weight limits. Use your
loaded gross (tractor + trailer + cargo); 80,000 lb is the federal max.
- Length - some city streets and rural roads ban long vehicles or have turns a
53' trailer can't make. Tractor + 53' trailer is about 70-75 ft.
- Hazmat - many tunnels and some routes are closed to placarded loads.
A different route changes the miles, so it changes the cost. This is for
quoting, not navigation - restriction data on open maps is incomplete. Always
follow posted signs and use a truck GPS on the road.
